Marvin Young (born 10 May 1967), better known by his stage name Young MC, is an English-born American rapper and actor. Born in London to Jamaican immigrants, Young moved with his family to Queens, New York at the age of of three. He went on to earn a degree in economics from the University of Southern California, and while he was there he signed to Los Angeles-based label Delicious Vinyl. Young gained fame with the release of his single "Bust a Move", which reached #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance. The single helped Young's debut album, Stone Cold Rhymin', reach #9 on the Billboard 200 and attain platinum status in the United States.
Following Young's breakthrough, he departed from Delicious Vinyl, citing restrictions on his work and unwanted changes to his album. He was sued by the label for breach of contract and the two parties settled out of court. Young signed with Capitol Records and released his second album, Brainstorm, in 1991, which reached #66 on the Billboard 200 and achieving gold status in the United States. His third album, What's the Flavor?, was released in 1993 and was a commercial failure, with both the album and its singles failing to chart. In 1997, Young released his fourth album, Return of the 1 Hit Wonder, on independent label Overall Records.
In 2000, Young founded his own record label, Young Man Moving Records Inc., and released his fifth album, Ain't Goin' Out Like That. It became his first album to chart since Brainstorm, as it peaked at #85 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. In 2002, he released his sixth album, Engage the Enzyme. That same year, Young appeared as a contestant on Weakest Link - Rap Stars Edition, which he won. In 2005, Young was cast in the reality show Celebrity Fit Club 3, which he also won when he lost more weight than anybody else. After a five year pause from releasing music, Young released his seventh studio album, Adrenaline Flow, in 2007. The following year, he released his eighth album, Relentless.
