Public Enemy are an American hip hop group, consisting of Chuck D, Flavor Flav, DJ Lord (who replaced Terminator X in 1999), music director Khari Wynn, the S1W group, and Professor Griff (who was dismissed from the group for anti-semetic remarks in 1990 but rejoined in 1999). Formed in Long Island, New York in 1982, Public Enemy are known for their politically charged lyrics and criticism of the American media, with an active interest in the frustrations and concerns of the African-American community. Their first four albums during the late 1980s and early 1990s were all certified either gold or platinum and were, according to music critic Robert Hilburn, "the most acclaimed body of work ever by a rap act."
