Kurtis Blow is the debut album by American rapper Kurtis Blow, released in 1980 on Mercury Records. One of the first hip hop studio albums, it is also the first hip hop album to be released on a major label. It includes the well-known Gold-certified song "The Breaks", which was often sampled in later hip hop records, mainly for its acapella introduction and drum break. The album's instrumentals were performed by a live band featuring artists such as Eddie Martinez, Tom Wolk and John Tropea.
